The establishment of UMT Life Centre aligns with the national goal of promoting Lifelong Learning (LLL), which is the third pillar in the development of Malaysia’s human capital. This aspiration has been outlined in the National Lifelong Learning Master Plan 2011-2022 document. Broadly, LLL is a comprehensive and continuous learning process that encompasses all forms of learning activities across all ages and socio-economic backgrounds to address learning needs, delivered and implemented through various flexible methods.

One of UMT’s educational objectives, aligned with the Malaysian Education Development Plan (2015-2025) – Higher Education Leap 3, is to promote Lifelong Learning (LLL). This endeavour aims to broaden access to education and empower the agenda of continuous learning throughout one’s life.

In September 2021, the University established the Lifelong Learning Department (JPSH) under the Basic and Continuing Education Centre. This department’s mandate is to nurture continuous education initiatives and serve as the primary catalyst for developmental activities, enhancements, and innovative program implementations across the University. Effective January 1st, 2024, the University Management Committee, during its 289th meeting (Number 13 of 2023), accorded approval to designate UMT Life Centre as a Tier 1 Higher Education Institution and Education Centre, operating under the portfolio of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International).
